The drawing will be held on Monday, March 7th at 9am. We will post all the correct answers so you can see how well you did shortly after.

We are happy to announce our newest weekly addition to our Blog called “Keeping You Informed.” Every week we will have a fun and informative bit of information posted on our blog to keep all of our patients updated on interesting dental facts and the latest developments that pertain to keeping your mouth and overall body healthy! This week we are focusing on something we all have…Saliva!

Keeping you Informed

Question: Why is our saliva (spit) so important in preventing cavities? Answer: Saliva has many properties and functions that help protect and promote remineralization (strengthening) of our teeth. Saliva is a continuing source for fluoride transport to all of the teeth’s surfaces. Saliva derives fluoride from all of it’s contacts, including fluoride from fluoridated water, fluoride products such as toothpaste and mouth-rinses, and fluoride that is placed on the teeth by your dentist such as varnish and topical fluorides. As saliva flows over the surfaces of our teeth, the fluoride that is carried within it helps to neutralize the acid that is produced by the bacteria in our mouths and also prevents the bacteria from multiplying, helping to prevent new cavities (Wilkins, 399).

Fun Dental Fact: *The average human produces 25,000 quarts of saliva in a lifetime. That is enough saliva to fill 2 swimming pools!
